2008
We had entries from all over North Wales once again and an increase in the number of Duet entries. It is nice to find so many past competitors coming back and trying again. The heats were held at Howell’s School over the two days of 2/3 rd February and seemed to go smoothly. In July the Finalists travelled to Cardiff for a Foyer Concert at The Wales Millennium Centre and then attended a performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Aled Jones in the main part. The whole event was voted a great success and the Finalists displayed amazing talent during the Concert.
A further Summer School was held in August at The Stiwt Theatre with an increase in numbers. The theme this year was the musical Hairspray and the showcase concert thrilled parents and friends alike. The ability of the students to learn songs, dances and script in so short a time was outstanding and they are to be thoroughly congratulated. On a more personal note there were seven ‘Bird’s’ attending – seven members of Peter Bird’s family and he was justifiably proud.
The Finals Concert was held at the Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl in front of a very good audience - the encouragement given to every performance was outstanding. The selected winners in each category were very deserving of a place in the Finals. The Dragon mascot ‘Cedric’, of National Childrens Homes, presented the winners with their trophies and this year for the first time each member of the winning groups received a slate medallion as a keepsake of the occasion.
2007
This year we had a sharp increase in the number of Groups that entered the Competition. Because of this the total number of Competitors taking part was 515 which is a very exciting achievement. There was also a big increase in the entries into the Duet Category. The Heats held at Howell’s School in January proved to be a logistical nightmare but everyone seemed to be in the right place at the right time. The top three in each category were thrilled to be selected to appear at the Finals Concert.
This took place on March 3rd at the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl and was a spectacular success. The guest artists this year were The Elsber School of Dance and their performance was enthralling. The competition was fierce in each category and it was agreed that all the Finalists deserved to be winners. However the Adjudicators selected the actual Winners who had the opportunity to record their winning songs in the recording studios at Howell’s School. The Finalists gave a Concert in the Foyer of the magnificient Lowry Theatre in Salford and then attended a performance of 'Eclipse' in the main theatre. The Concert was watched by about 3oo people at the theatre and was very well received.
The 2007 Summer School was held at The Stiwt Theatre in Rhos, Wrexham once again and attended by twenty four very enthusiastic young people. This year the theme was the pantomime ‘Aladdin’ and new skills of comedy and timing were learned. The Showcase Concert at the end of the week was attended by about 100 parents and friends and the production went very smoothly. It was a credit to the hard work of the young people throughout the week.
2006
A new category for duets was introduced this year We had thirteen Duet entrants and the first three, as Finalists, added a welcome new dimension to the Finals Concert. Once again there were an increased number of entrants with over 400 young people entering the Competition and over 700 audience at the Finals Concert. All the Finalists were taken to the Wales Millennium Centre to perform in a Foyer Concert there in front of an audience of about 300. The Families were invited to accompany the Finalists and everyone went on a tour of the new theatre. The winners for 2006 had the opportunity to record their winning song in the recording studio in the theatre and they each received the edited CD. The whole event was voted a success and a great experience.
The Summer School was held at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos once again in August but also one was held at Ysgol John Bright in Llandudno in July This proved to be an ideal venue and the two Showcase Concerts on the Friday evenings were much appreciated by the parents and friends. Although we would have wished for a greater attendance the two summer schools were much enjoyed by everyone and new skills in dance, drama and singing were definitely acquired.
Musical Theatre Young Singers of the Year Competition is continuing to grow in standard and numbers but most importantly it has become an event that gives pleasure to so many Competitors and audiences alike. It is exciting to be involved with the talent displayed by the young people of North Wales and it is hoped that the competition will continue to be supported throughout the region and beyond.
2005
We extended southwards to Powys and we also welcomed Entrants from the neighbouring counties. There were 105 Solo entries and thirteen Groups and once again the Adjudicators found it a very difficult task to select the Winners from such a high standard of entry.
A second Summer School was held at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos and was once again very successful. The young people gained in confidence and skill throughout the week and presented a showcase Concert for Family and Friends on the last day.
During the year two Grand Concerts were held to celebrate the five years of the competition. One was at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos for all the Finalists over the period who lived in the East of North Wales and another at 'Galeri', Caernarfon for those living in the West. Both Concerts were well attended and it was very interesting to learn of the progress of all these Finalists in the years 2001 - 2005.
In 2005 Lydia Griffiths from Wrexham accepted an invitation to become a Patron of the Musical Theatre Young Singers. Lydia has herself performed on the West End stage after many years as a young person performing in local Society's productions. It is hoped that she will help to encourage other young people to strive to achieve their ambitions on the Musical Theatre stage.
2004
This fourth year saw the Competition with even more Entrants, making the task for the Adjudicators very hard. This year the age range was extended to be between 11 and 19 which necessitated three categories for the Soloists and the Group Category was split into two: the first for fifteen year olds and under the second for 19 year olds and under.
The first Summer School was run by the Competition organisers, during the week of 23rd August 2004 at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos. This covered all the skills required when participating on stage in Musical Theatre and was led by a team of professional Tutors. Pupils of the 2004 Summer School successfully competed in the 2005 Competition and reached the finals.
2003
The number of Competitors exceeded 300, surely the Competition was now established as an annual event for the foreseeable future with a standard that got higher each year. By way of innovation this year the Competition supported the Meningitis Research Foundation.
2002
Montgomeryshire, at their request, was added to the area of the Competition and the number of Competitors rose to over 200 drawn from every county of the region. The Finals Concert was held at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre. Support was received from H R H Prince Charles, Rhodri Morgan, other Assembly Members and Members of Parliament, together with entries from Musical Theatre Societies, Dance Schools and High Schools in the area. The Adjudicators averred that the standard of the Contestants was even higher than the previous year.
2001
In that first year over 120 Competitors from throughout the region entered. Finalists were selected, with the help of professional Adjudicators, for the Solo and Group Categories following the preliminary rounds. The Finals were held at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos near Wrexham. The icing on the cake was the attendance of Bryn Terfel who joined all the Competitors on the stage at the end of the evening.
2000
In the Millennium Year, an idea was born that there should be a new competition for the young people of North Wales to attract them to Musical Theatre and to provide an opportunity for them to showcase their talents.
A proposal was put to the Welsh Amateur Music Federation by Peter Bird their Representative in North Wales. The Executive Committee endorsed the idea and asked Peter Bird to organise the Competition. It was agreed that the Competition (in the first instance) should cover the six Counties of North Wales. Bryn Terfel was invited to be Patron and there was delight all round when he accepted this invitation.
